Beyond Meat: burger vegetal cu gust de carne.// Beyond Meat: veggie burger tasting like the real deal.

Miiiaam.

A ieșit deeelicios. Deeelicios!

One of this year’s resolutions was to reduce the meat consumption. For several reasons: starting with health (many studies have shown that high meat consumption is not healthy at all), the environment (breeding animals uses a lot of resources and has a high carbon footprint) and to try to minimise the suffering of animals, many of them kept in horrible conditions. We are omnivorous, but we have the tendency to exaggerate our meat consumption; we don’t consume other animal products that often. So we started baby steps, with a meat-free daily meal and trying to experiment more about it.

So, we chose to try the Beyond Meat burger. We found it in Kaufland and threw two packs in the basket. We than quickly ran home, took out the grill and slap them on it. Meantime, I also quickly cooked some mushrooms (from bulk section ?) with some onions from my grandmother’s garden. We’ve cut a red onion and massacred some cherry tomatoes (which were not the most sustainable choice because they are not in season and neither Romanian, but nothing else came to mind at the moment). We quickly assembled everything and seasoned it with some sweet peppers sauce. Miiiaam.

It came out delicious. Deeelicios! We liked it a lot (even the boyfriend did, although he is not a big fan of vegetables), we really liked that it tasted like meat and that it fills you up. It is made of pea protein, beetroot (which gives it a reddish color), coconut oil, potato starch. It is 100% vegan, soy free, gluten free. The only thing that is wrong with this burger is the packaging, which is obviously plastic, unfortunately. ☹️ And it annoys me that they didn’t find another solution (for example, a cardboard box, as I found at another Kaufland veggie burger), although they invested so much time in it and also money to make it so similar to the taste of meat.

At Kaufland there are only two of these patties in a plastic package, but I understand that in Selgros / Metro there are more pieces. The conclusion: yes, I would consume it occasionally. And I say occasionally because of the packaging. It is especially good for those who are at the beginning of the journey towards minimizing meat consumption or transitioning to a vegan / vegetarian lifestyle.
